Safety Tip #1

The door balance test is one of the most important and simplest tests for preventative maintenance.  Periodically testing the balance of your door is vital in detecting problems before they create more problems, increasing repair costs. Here is how you test the balance of your garage door. Once the door is down, release the operator trolley by pulling the emergency release chord.  Next, lift the door around waist high.  If the door stays waist high without falling, the door is balanced.  If it does not stay up, the door will need to be balanced before permanent damage occurs to the opener.   A door out of balance can destroy the motor and gears. If your door is not balanced, call All American Door Co.

CG: SAFETY TIP # 2:  SPRINGS ARE DANGEROUS

A broken garage door spring is one of the most common door repairs.  It is also, by far, one of the most dangerous repairs a homeowner can attempt.  Springs are wound and set to extreme tension.  Please do not attempt to repair a broken spring yourself!  You should only do a visual inspection of the springs.  A sign that you have a broken spring is a 2” gap between the coils.  If you suspect a problem contact All American Door Co. to schedule a repair.

Safety Tip #3

Regularly lubricating the moving parts of your door can add years of life to your door over time.  The metal on your garage door can dry out, crack, and become brittle.  Especially in extreme climates.  It is essential to keep the moving parts of your garage door thoroughly lubricated to prevent corrosion or rust.  It is important to have  your garage door should be looked at by All American Door Co. once a year for a maintenance check.

Earn a up to $1500 in Garage Door Tax Credits

The U.S. government is offering financial incentives to homeowners to buy qualifying insulated garage doors. Under stimulus legislation signed by President Obama, tax credits for energy-efficient home improvements have been extended and increased significantly. Adding a new garage door in 2009 or 2010 can save you money with lower home energy consumption and costs. With the tax credit inentive,  it will help pay for itself this year.

Tax Credit Specifics

• Tax credits are available for qualifying garage door purchases that are placed in service from Jan. 1, 2009 – Dec. 31, 2010.
• The maximum tax credit for all qualifying improvements combined is 30% of the cost of each product and $1500 over the lifetime of the tax credit between 2009 - 2010.
• Homeowners now have another great reason to buy qualifying insulated residential garage doors - tax credit!
• A tax credit is more vluable than a tax deduction because it reduces your tax “above the line” or “dollar-for-dollar,” while a deduction only decreases the amount of income that is taxed.

Tax Credit Eligability

The purchased garage door must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for the tax credit:

• The door must be installed on an insulated garage.
• The door must be an insulated residential garage door.
• The door must have a U-factor equal to or less than 0.30, even if the door contains glazing.
• The door perimeter must have a means to control air infiltration.
• If the door contains windows (glazing), it must offer a Solar Heat Gain Co-efficient (SHGC) equal to or less than 0.30.
• The door must remain in service for at least five years.
• The garage must be part of the taxpayer’s principal residence.
• Dealers should provide homeowners with a Manufacturer’s Certification Statement along with a breakdown of the material and labor costs.

The tax credit is based on the total material cost of the purchase (the cost of installation does not qualify). The tax credit is equal to the sum of 30% of all qualified energy-saving improvements installed in an existing home in the calendar years of 2009 and 2010. The maximum tax credit is $1500.

For products placed in service in 2009, you will need to file the 2009 IRS Form 5695 and submit it with your 2009 taxes (by April 15, 2010).  On the 2009 1040 form, the residential energy tax credit (from Form 5695) is claimed on line 52.

Door Material

Steel doors are the most popular as they provide a hardy barrier against harsh Minnesota weather and freezing temperatures. Wood is also an excellent choice. The technology of wood doors has improved greatly over the years. Wood not only looks great, but also provides a natural insulation against freezing temperatures and harsh weather conditions.  

Door Style and Options

Doors are typically available in raised panel, recessed panel, ranch or flush designs and can come with grooved or smooth panels, standard glass inserts, decorative inserts and architectural designs.

Door Insulation

You can increase your insulation’s R-value by choosing thicker insulation, which costs a bit more. However, the additional expense is usually worth it, especially if you like to spend time in your garage throughout the year. • Better - This level provides a beautiful, energy-efficient garage door• Insulated two-layer steel construction • Insulated R-Value 4.4 – 6.3*
• Best - The premier level offers outstanding durability, appearance, energy-efficiency, performance and safety • Insulated three-layer “sandwich” steel construction • Insulated R-Value 6.6 – 17.2*

Door Type

There are two main types of residential garage doors - sectional doors and one piece doors. For practical purposes All American Door sells primarily sectional garage doors.

Sectional Garage Doors – Consists of four or five sections stacked on top of each other and are hinged together. Sectional doors raise and lower behind a frame and create a better seal against the weather, making them a good choice for Minneapolis-St Paul homes.

One Piece “Kick Out” Doors – Mostly found on the west coast and are considered less desirable for several reasons.

One piece doors were very popular in the sixties and 70′s in certain regions.  They are made entirely of one piece of steel which makes them harder to haul, carry and install. One piece doors also have a more primitive spring balance system that is much more dangerous to homeowners.

Door Maintenance

While metal doors are the most resistant to damage from the elements, all doors will deteriorate to some degree if not properly maintained.  Here are a few things to keep in mind regarding the maintenance of your garage door:

Look out for dents, dings and scratches when caring for your steel door. Check your garage door each year for any damage that compromises the finish and could cause rust. Wood doors need to be properly sealed and resealed every couple of years. All garage doors need to be protected from water by directing water away from the door via gutters and eaves. Last but not least, garage doors are not meant to be used as a backstop.
